We continue our celebrations of the World Heritage Day on April 18, with players and officials from the New PEPSU Kabaddi Association, Punjab at the Golden Temple in Amristar, India.
World Heritage Day is observed every year on April 18 to preserve the human heritage and recognize the efforts of the organizations working for it.
The day is celebrated to maintain the legacy and save the rich heritage which has been given to us by our ancestors.
World Kabaddi sees the correlation between the age old sport of kabaddi and the World Heritage Day celebrations.
Kabaddi is said to have been invented close to 5,000 years ago and is currently played in more than 50 countries around the world.
What better way than to celebrate this great event by showcasing this sport at world heritage locations around the world.
The Golden Temple Gurdwara complex has been nominated as a Unesco World Heritage Site and its application is pending. But for the millions of Sikhs around the world the Golden Temple is not only spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism but also rich in heritage.
The Golden Temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning “abode of God” or Darbār Sahib, meaning “exalted court”. The gurdwara is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das in 1577.
The Gurdwara was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Mughal and invading Afghan armies. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This led to the name the Golden Temple.
The Golden Temple is an open house of worship for all people, from all walks of life and faith. It also houses the langar – a free Sikh community run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship.
World Kabaddi members are encouraged take photos and videos at heritage locations in their own countries to celebrate the World Heritage Day.
